Towards Ultra-Precision Medicine for Radio-immunotherapy Combinations

Cancer treatment has come a long way, evolving from broad, one-size-fits-all approaches to ultra targeted and personalized therapies. Among these advancements is Radioimmunotherapy (RTIO)—a treatment that harnesses the systemic effects of immunotherapy and combines them with localized therapeutic power of radiation. This innovative method not only targets tumorwith remarkable accuracy but also minimizes harm to healthy tissues, making it a game-changer in oncology.

On December 19, 2024, Gustave Roussy hosted the year’s final CCE Lecture, showcasing the latest breakthroughs in RTIO. Led by Pr. Eric Deutsch and Dr. Roger Sun, the session explored how cutting-edge research and emerging technologies are paving the way for more precise and effective cancer treatments.

Lecture Highlights

Attracting attendees from the different CCE centres and moderated by Pr. Pierre Blanchard, the lecture presented the latest advancements in translational research that are guiding the combination of radiotherapy and immunotherapy, paving the way for more precise cancer treatments. It covered emerging technologies and approaches that enable more effective, personalized therapies.

About Professor Eric Deutsch

Professor Eric Deutsch serves as Chair of the Radiation Oncology Department at Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France. He is also the Vice-Dean of Research at Paris-Saclay University and the Director of the Inserm Molecular Radiotherapy and Novel Therapeutic Innovation Unit (UMR1030).

Pr. Eric Deutsch’s research focuses on combining radiotherapy and immunotherapy, utilizing techniques such as partial irradiation, heterogeneous irradiation, and FLASH therapy to improve treatment precision and reduce the impact on healthy tissues. His works aim to advance precision medicine in cancer care.

Meet Dr. Roger Sun

Dr. Roger Sun is a radiation oncologist, researcher at Gustave Roussy. Dr. Roger Sun is a researcher in the Department of Radiotherapy at Gustave Roussy, where his work focuses on the integration of imaging data and machine learning techniques to develop non-invasive biomarkers that help guide and optimize radiotherapy and immunotherapy.

In 2024, he was awarded the prestigious ESMO José Baselga Fellowship for Clinician Scientists.
