About Cancer Prevention Europe
Cancer Prevention Europe (CPE) is a European consortium coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization. Its mission is clear: to reduce cancer burden across Europe, by advancing prevention research and strategies at all levels of prevention—primary, secondary, and tertiary. By fostering interdisciplinary research and action, CPE unites European countries in a shared mission to translate scientific evidence into effective, equitable prevention efforts. The mission is built upon four strategic pillars:

A Strategic Agenda for the Future
Cancer Prevention Europe (CPE) is entering a new phase focused on delivering coordinated, evidence-based roadmaps across the full spectrum of cancer prevention — primary, secondary, and tertiary. Our strategic agenda aims to strengthen Europe’s leadership in cancer prevention by aligning research, policy, and implementation within a structured, collaborative framework.
A central priority is the development of integrated, multicentre research initiatives that foster cross-border collaboration, open science, and methodological harmonisation. Through its expert working groups, CPE identifies strategic research gaps, reduces fragmentation across Europe, and promotes investment in prevention science that is both impactful and policy-relevant.
CPE is also advancing the development of a European Cancer Prevention Knowledge Hub — a dynamic platform designed to consolidate scientific evidence, support roadmap implementation, facilitate stakeholder engagement, and accelerate the translation of research into practice.
Capacity building is a core pillar of CPE’s mission. Through its Early Career Network, the consortium actively supports not only early career researchers but also early career professionals working at the interface of science, policy, public health practice, and advocacy. By fostering interdisciplinary exchange, mentorship, and leadership development, CPE aims to strengthen Europe’s prevention workforce and ensure sustainable expertise across sectors.
CCE’s Contribution: Early Detection and Prevention
CCE’s Early Detection and Prevention Pillar is dedicated to advancing cancer early detection and prevention, with a particular focus on populations at higher risk, where the unmet medical need is greatest. This work builds on ongoing efforts to demonstrate the benefits of population-level risk stratification approaches.
CCE’s vision is that early cancer detection should not be developed in isolation, but rather integrated with interceptive interventions — strategies designed to stop cancer development at its earliest stages. Through synergistic research initiatives across its network, CCE aims to contribute to the development and implementation of these innovative approaches.
Beyond research, the pillar is also committed to developing high-level educational programs within the CCE consortium, strengthening expertise and leadership in cancer prevention and early detection across Europe.
